Frequently Asked Questions

Helium is a decentralized wireless network powered by the Helium blockchain. Learn more about it at https://www.helium.com/.
You will earn 20% of the hotspot revenue each month.
In order for the network to work efficiently it needs to be distributed across the nation. To incentivize this behavior, each hotspot needs to be about 1000 feet apart or the rewards are penalized.
The hotspot uses 5W at peak usage. This is less than a standard LED bulb. In Rochester, MN, a hotspot will cost you roughly $0.50/month.
Expected bandwidth utilized by a hotspot is 1-5 kb/s (about the size of a long text message). The hotspot uses data for two main things, to maintain a view of the global Helium Network, and send and receive data packets for sensors that are in range and using your piece of the Helium Network. In both instances, the total amount of data usage is extremely small and will never affect your network quality.
This is the most common question. And for good reason. Security of networks is the highest priority. Please refer to this Network Security overview for information on what Helium does to keep the Helium Network safe and protected. All hotspots comply with FCC regulations.
